Give the Birds a Bath! Increase the attraction your yard has to birds by adding a bird bath, and then adding either a mister or a dripper. Placing these near natural habitat will increase the chance the birds will visit. First, by simply having a bird bath, birds will visit when the area is dry and rain scarce. They will be thirsty and if your bath is clean, available, and full with fresh water, they will come. If the bath is new, it may take the shyer birds some time before feeling safe to stop by. Again, placing away from human activity and closer to natural habitat will help this process. So, give it some time. But, above all, be sure it is clean and freshened. CLEANING THE BATH If your bird bath is green with scum and dirt, get a hose, stiff brush, and some bleach. First, tip the dirty water out, spray the empty bath with the hose and get rid of any loose debris. Refill the bath half or 3/4 full with fresh water from the hose. Add a capful or two of bleach to the water in the bath. While letting the solution work on the stained bath, water your planters or do another close by activity for about 10 minutes making sure no animals use the bath in the meantime. Go back to the bath. Using the stiff brush, scrub the inside of the bath gently so as not to splash the solution onto your clothing or nearby cushions, etc. Then using the hose, rinse, rinse, rinse the whole bird bath extensively, to get any remaining bleach solution removed from the bird bath entirely. When rinsed thoroughly, fill the newly cleaned bath full again with fresh water. Add some natural enzyme clarifier to the bath to help extend the time before needing to repeat this procedure. Natural Enzyme clarifier can be purchased from Go Wild with Birds, Downtown Neenah. Be sure to have a rock or other object in any deep part of the bath so small birds can use the bath more easily than just tipping from the edge. Consider adding a water dripper or mister to increase the sound and appeal of your bird bath to area birds during summer's dry spells.
